Nice specimen. There is a sub-species ssp subglandulosis, which has little glandular tips to the hairs, but you need a strong magnifier to see them. I'm not at all sure that the behaviour is not site specific. Hard to say unless they've done genetic tests.
It's not especially uncommon, but very specific in the habitats it likes. I've even found it among the small limestone outcrops above Strickland Cres. in Deakin (100m up hill from the turn-about), on the north slopes of Red Hill. Also on Mt Stromlo, 100m below the big dome.
Michael I am quite keen to take a look at these ferns as I've never seen one in the flesh. I'll try to take a look down this way over the weekend. Let me know if you're around, if not no worries - I'll try to reverse engineer your sighting locations :)
Met up with Michael B today and we went fern hunting as well as finding heaps of other great species and 2 echidnas! Was a top afternoon and I learnt a huge amount while Michael gave me a tour of Rob Roy range. It's a stunning location and has a very diverse mix of species. Thanks again Michael.
