A lot more detail than provided in these photos is need before this plant can be identified to species level - which direction the hairs on the stems go (upwards or downwards), and what the stipules (outgrowths) at the bases of the leaf stalks look like. In addition, the shape of the fruiting body and whether it has a tap root or not.

I will go back and get these details. I am however loathe to dig it up - the place where it was growing was once a nice bit of woodland until it started being 'managed' and the fleabane and the digging of the soil have ruined it. I only came across the one specimen of this plant. Is ID fatal without confirmation of taproot?

Don't dig it up. If we cannot get a positive ID from the other details (particularly stipules, which diffentiate Oxalis corniculata from the native species) we may have to wait till it has fruiting bodies.
