The fruit body is s polypore. It consists of a cap atop a stem. The cap is circular, up to around 10 centimetres in diameter, velvety and coloured in shades of brown in concentric bands. The cap is often more-or-less flat and lower centrally.
On the underside of the cap there are densely packed pores. The underside is white in fresh specimens but it becomes dingier with age. When fresh and white, the surface bruises bright red on being damaged, with the red colour then darkening.
The stem, also brown and velvety, may grow to around 15 centimetres on length, 2 in diameter.
On soil in native forests or woodlands.
