Ist record of this plant in the ACT since 1972- only other recorded ACT location is mouth of Sullivans Creek

Presumably Marsilea mutica, but a proper botanic analysis would be useful. Max Gray recorded this from farm dams in the ACT many years ago.

Waltraud could you please have a closure look at this plant and lodge a specimen with David Albrecht at the CSIRO herbarium. There are only three records of this plant in the ACT plant database, all from the mouth of Sullivans Creek observed in 1969, 1971 and 1972. The key feature seems to be that the rhizomes and fronds are virtually glaberous and the fruiting body is globose. David it certainly looks to be glaberous and have other features of Marsilea mutica are you happy if we confirm it as such?

Sounds like a good plan, and we can always revise it if it's later found to be another species.

Okay. I'll dig out a clump to ensure spore bodies if present are included and show collected material to Isobel Crawford - perhaps she can bring a specimen to David.

There are far better people than me to do the analysis at the ANBG/Aust Herbarium. I don't know if Jim Croft is still there.

If you open photo 5 in photoview you can just see some hairs on the stem of the young frond; I couldn't see hairs at older fronds.

... which would probably match the description by NSW PlantNet: "virtually glabrous except for a few hairs sometimes present at the base of the leaflets"...

Unfortunately, there is a lot of disturbance going on at that little dam such as yabbying, digging out mussels, trampling and a lot of dogs off leash splashing around in the water. I observe a lot of strange square holes dug right at the upstream edge of the little dam.
