Mataeomera mesotaenia (Large Scale Moth)

Mataeomera ligata, mesotaenia, coccophaga and dubia are difficult to distinguish, and it is possible that M. coccophaga and dubia are the same species. M. ligata is usually has a plain grey forewing with a black tick just inside the tip. M. mesotaenia are usually grey at the base and termen with a whitish band across the outer part of the forewing. M. coccophaga are often reddish with a complex of transverse lines and lighter patches, but the species is variable and there are greyer specimens that are hard to separate from M. mesotaenia, and less patterned light yellow ones that are hard to separate from M. dubia. M. dubia usually have plain light yellow-brown forewings except for a variable dark line that extends along the costa from the base, then wiggles inwards around a sometimes lighter area before returning to the costa just before the apex. The line may be prominent, or reduced in various ways, including just a tick near the apex. (Elements of this sort of line are present in all the species.
