Tetramorium / Austromorium (genus group) (Pennant ants)

Tetramorium and Austromorium are both members of the Myrmicinae subfamily. Like other members of this subfamily, they have two segments between the main body and gaster (abdomen). There are around 25 species of Tetramorium and two species of Austromorium in Australia. Three species of Tetramorium are exotic, but are not regarded as a significant pest.

Tetramorium and Austromorium are very similar in general morphology, with square or rectangular heads, 10 or 11 segmented antennae and strong sculpuring on the head and body in most species. Their similarity makes them extremely difficult to differentiate from photographs, which is why the genus group has been raised.

Tetramorium is a common genus throughout Australia except in the most arid regions.
