User's notes

Unable to clearly make out the head in photographs. Snake was basking immediately over its burrow and rapidly moved inside when the photographer approached on the nearby trail. Large black scales on its back, and appeared to have more of a wedge-shaped head than an Eastern Brown or Red-bellied Black snake.

Most likely species based on locality and what I can see?

Thank you - that would have been my guess from other entries, but it was too quick to get a good look at the head and I wasn’t sure if the colouring was too dark.

Copperheads can be any colour, including almost black
