Deceased shingleback with fox scat ontop. Shingleback and scat appear to be older as both dried and sun bleached, though ants still inspecting lizard. I have seen fox scat ontop of objects before (logs, rocks, tussocks) and proximal to predated animals, but not on top of remains like this. The wound to the shingleback appears to be a crushed side, possibly from a bite. Fox and shingleback are active at different times of the day (nocturnal and diurnal, respectively) and I can’t see a bone dense shingleback being high value fox food. This doesn’t rule out a fox attack, but does make me wonder whether the bite is more likely from a domestic dog that would have been active the same time as the shingleback, then the fox has later marked the carcass. This observation was close to the walking trail and so strangely arranged that I query whether it’s staged.
