Significant sighting

Thanks to WendyEM for suggesting the MoV species 'Proteuxoa sp. 3 (MoV, Part 9), illustrated notes for which are available on the supporting disc for that un-named species. The notes state: 'This species is similar to P. adelopa but is has a dark collar on the the thorax' (see notes above that effect). The Museum of Victoria has one specimen (Dromana, 1980) and ANIC has more specimens from NSW and the ACT ( eg. Trangie, NSW, 1952). The two specimens (only females) illustrated by MoV also show a diffuse orbicular spot in line with the reniform mark at the base of the forewing as can also be seem in this sighting. The plain wing, no 'checks, and a 'stripe' at the termen and a generally dark sub-terminal area all correspond.

User's notes

at light, species suggested is the best I can do

I do not think the shape of the reniform mark matches P. paratorna
Proteuxoa paratorna

I know what you mean, but there seems to be variation between specimens and there are some that look similar to mine, plus the issue of general apprearance.

OK , having got my access back to MoV, and having a look at images on iNaturalist. maybe Proteuxoa adelopa is a better fit. distribution suggests it could be possible here

Thanks for the P. adelopa suggestion. I think its a contender, more so than P. leptochroa which I looked long and hard at too, if only because the reniform mark has a slight reddish tiinge as here:-

However, looking at the the two pages for P. adelopa for Part 9 on the supporting disc, I also note the iNaturalist examples also show a white orbicular spot towards the forewing base there and in many of the iNaturalist examples which seems to be present in this specimen. Also P. adelopa elsewhere apparently lacks the black 'collar' behind the head apparent here. However, I must say the black dots along the costa seem to match P. paratorna. MoV are tentatative about P. paratorna. They only have a few specimens and the type specimen is in the UK!

Thank you for that, I'll look out for some more if the weather holds. First one of these I've had

I'm not sure I see the russet colour near the reniform mark in the illustreated MoV specimens on our moth, so that feature may indicate our specimen above is a male.

A new species sighting for NatureMapr's Canberra and Southern Tablelands region if confirmed, Excellent photo, and yes, it would be nice to see more sightings corresponding with apparently un-named species.
