User's notes

I was surprised to hear the call of the young channel-billed cuckoo again - in pretty much exactly the same spot as 6 days earlier. However, this time the calling was not as incessant. I spotted the host parent (pied currawong, fifth photo). The cuckoo flew off to copse a little way away from the parents, and sat there, calling just once or twice, hopping from branch to branch. I did not see it being fed at all. From my limited reading, I understand the channel-billed natural parents hang around somewhere in the area while their chicks are raised by the unwitting hosts. They then come back to collect the juvenile before flying north to PNG/Indonesia? I'm wondering if this particular juvenile will soon be claimed by its parent(s), and begin its migration? I suspect this also indicates this area was close to the nest location . . .
