Significant sighting

The Channel-billed Cuckoo is a rare summer migrant to the Canberra & Southern Tablelands region and this is the first confirmed breeding record for NatureMapr in this region.

User's notes

As I was leaving, I heard the loud and incessant call of a juvenile (I thought) currawong. However, there was something about the call that didn't quite ring true, as it reminded me of a channel-billed cuckoo fledgling that I had seen just a week ago at the coast (which I'd not seen or heard previously). Surely, it couldn't be a channel-bill fledgling here? Despite the building storm and thunder, I followed the call and spied a currawong parent. I continued the search, and to my amazement, found a young channel-billed cuckoo - here, near Braidwood!! I did not think they bred inland? I had heard an adult channel-bill in the area around October/November - perhaps they were the parents? I am intrigued by the similarity of the young channel-bill's call, to that of a currawong. I have video of both this bird, and the one down the coast . . . I'm guessing it would be quite an ask to be able to upload video as a sighting?

Great record Lisa! If you upload your video to YouTube or another platform like Google Photos you can share a link to it

Oh, that's an idea - unfortunately, I have neither

Do you back up your photos/videos to the cloud?

Top find before a very big storm to hit the region, causing a lot of power outages.

@MatthewFrawley Thank you - it was exciting, and unexpected. And coincidental that I saw it at that time, given the cuckoo is known colloquially as the storm-bird!

@HelenCross No, sadly - all backed up physically. Hmmmmm. I'm wondering about my choices, right about now
