Sorry, I should have paid more attention to what they were growing from. I think they were growing more from the ground, the base of the fungus was covered in leaf litter.
Not to worry. The viscid cap & stems, the dark brown spores (visible on one of the stems) and the presence of the ring-like remnants of the partial veils are enough. I'm 99.99999% sure these were growing from herbivore dung - perhaps from dung that had been squashed a bit and therefore more easily hidden by overgrowth. These are very nice photos that show all the useful details.
