Was she looking in, or chewing around a hollow?

we heard them, and the pair flew towards us, but the male held back, while the female landed on a trunk close by, and seemed to check it. Then she flew to a branch straight overhead, and went to the trunk again, and afterwards they both flew off. On both trees there didn't seem to be a hollow - she didn't stick her head in or anything. We didn't notice her chewing either, so it looked like a wholly unsuccessful exercise.

Thanks - there was a nest hollow nearby last year, which was probably predated by a Brushtail Possum - so that is what peeked my interest
