on the north facing slope of a dry gully, one shrub looking very stressed and the other not much better

It could be A ulicifolia. They have very tiny fine stipules at the base of phyllodes; I need a magnifying glass or look with the bright sky as a background to see them; however sometimes I found that not all phyllodes of one specimen have stipules or they are so tiny that I couldn't find them but then other phyllodes in the same specimen might have them clearly visible. The phyllodes of A ulicifolia are a bit wider at the base which gives them a triangular shape with a very small angle at the top. The A ulicifolia i spotted on Mts Majura and Ainslie often seem to struggle and quite often seem to be affected by a fungus (?) that deforms the wooden stems and seems to affect the health of the plant; see for instance https://canberra.naturemapr.org/sightings/4511475.
