This might reduce future frustrations: Most useful (field) characteristic for separating Bolboschoenus fluviatilis (the moist robust Bolboschoenus) and Scirpus polystachys is presence (Bolboschoenus) or absence (Scirpus) of involucral bracts - as distinct from leaves. Yes, there are other characteristics, and also size attributes (size of nut, width of leaf, culm diameter, spikelet length: these help). Matt's photos show no sign of involucral bracts (immediately below inflorescence) tho admittedly a bit obscured in main photo. I'm afraid carbonAI has a LONG way to go !
