male, assuming it is a worn specimen that has lost the upper surface markings !!

Many species in several families have a large dark area under the hindwing margin, but most of these also have a dark markings under the forewing tip and margin, or the hindwing dark area is not round and under the wing tip, as the marks on this specimen are, see webpages linked from
