considering the book and CD of Moths of Victoria Pt.2 (2nd Ed) the Separating Utetheisa sp page on CD says "Both species are variable in size and spacing of the dots on the forewing." It shows U. pulchelloides has a red dot adjacent to tornus, however while not mentioned in the text I note that the images of U. lotrix in book&CD have 4 red dots adjacent to the forewing inner margin while U. pulchelloides all have 5 - like this moth has.

Yes, but sometimes the inner margin of the forewing is not fully visible or hidden from view.

oops sorry that should read COSTA not inner margin. I had written this once then lost it. I should not have rushed the re-write

U. lotrix and U. pulchelloides both have 5 red spots along the costa. The number differs only along the forewing hind-margin, the possible 5th (U. pulchelloides) at the tornus, see for example original drawing of U. lotrix by Pieter Cramer at Figure E (lower left corner) of

Yes, the markings, I understand it differ on the trailing outer forewing hind margin near the tornus. U. pulchelloides typically has 5 red marks along the hind margin, whereas U. lotrix lacks the fifth outer red mark, having only 4.

I think the moth has the left wing overlapping the right showing the hind marginof the left wing, which only has 4 red spots along it.

I'm not sure we know either way with this moth!
