very unusual that this species should be calling in the cold and miserable weather, plus during the day- this behaviour is definitely new to me

Thank you for the i.d. Anke-Maria. It didn't seem to be calling but other frog species were. Now that I look at the image again I can just see the + shaped pupil and that the beige spots on its back might be greenish in a different light.

the yellow and black stripy groins are also a good id feature- you definitely got a beaut there! well done for being so observant in the rain
