This sighting is connected to the following previous sighting: https://canberra.naturemapr.org/sightings/4388665 This plant is within a few metres and probably the Parent plant. Leaf features similar. Clear (old) seed capsules visible on this one.
Hi Max would you mind collecting a specimen? branchlet with flowers and fruits if possible don't need to be on the same branch (but of cause from one plant). I have not included Leptospermum in the Flora list since I'm reluctant to list the genus ie Leptospermum sp. I'm keen to get a botanist id using specimens (rather than photographs) whenever possible. Please place in a plastic bag in the fridge and give it to me at next opportunity.
Great; the species will be flowering in late spring / early summer. By the way, the Census of Vascular Plants of the ACT and the Australian Native Plants Society Canberra Region call the species "Alpine Teatree" which gives a hint about its natural location. It is one of the species that line the creeks at higher altitudes; I'm pretty sure it is not endemic to Mts Majura /Ainslie.
Hmmmmmmm, those do not look like the flower of L.myrtifolium, they look more like L.multicaule which i've always thought of as a sprawling shrub to around 30cm these plants look bigger. How tall were they @MAX
I gave Waltraud some specimens of this Leptospermum couple of weeks ago for botanical ID ( with I.Crawford I think...). . Haven't heard back as yet ...🙂
hi all sorry I had a very stressful time and the sample is still in my fridge; I will bring to I. Crawford for identification asap. Max, i assume it still flowers; perhaps you could collect a flowering branchlet for id on one of your evening strolls. Sorry again w
I am happy that the material Max gave me, via Waltraud, is Leptospermum brevipes. The individuals in my garden are flowering at present, and the material matches well. The weeping habit and non-retention of old fruits are also characteristic of this species. It is an interesting new record for this species. Isobel.
Thanks everyone, combined detective effort here to solve ID. Wonder how old the Parent plant is ? 2m shrub, multistem. Any guesses ? And how did it get here when there are no source plants in the vicinity I believe... Leptospermum seeds are very tiny and I believe they have a relatively short seed viability period ?
