What traits are you seeing to make it E. viminalis? It has rough bark all the way to the top, on all but the smallest limbs. Have not seen it shed significant amounts of bark in over a year. Im keen to figure out how to ID these bloody things!
Some gum trees have adult and juvenile leaves. The juveniles leaves of viminalis that you included in your sighting - from resprouts down low- are distinctive because they are opposite and sitting right up against the branch without having a leaf stem. While there are several ribbon gums planted in the city, viminalis is the only one native to the ACT. However two other local gum trees have large strips of bark hanging from their branches. Brown Barrel has thick grey-brown bark covering its trunk and main branches, while vimanilis is smooth. Mountain gum also has a smooth trunk and has bark that hangs down but its juvenile leaves are round rather than the linear ones of viminalis. You only have another 27 species to go know. I'll give you a test in a weeks time.
