Looks a bit like a Bogong Moth larvae.

I agree. Any nibbled plants in the vicinity? Is it in protective custody?

Yes, I have kept it but I have not had much success with getting moths out of caterpillars. Maybe this one will work. I have no idea what plant it was feeding on because it was walking through my carport when I found it. It seemed to be covered in dirt as if it had been in the ground. Hmmm...

There's a good chance it was looking for a place to pupate. Try giving it some mixed gauge mulch to hide in.

I put it in a jar with a few leaves, a stick and sand at the bottom. It is now gone so I assume it went under the surface. :-)

Bogong Moths seek cool places i.e a concrete garage. So not unlikely!

Do not be discouraged by a poor caterpillar survival rate. If the Bogong population is stable (approximately the same each year), then of the say1,000 eggs a female lays, only 2 will, on average, survive to procreate the following year. So 998 will die from predation, disease or parasites. Protective custody can limit this, but many will have been infected with parasites or disease as early instars.
