Not entirely sure, but this may be the plasmodial stage of a myxomycte, possibly one of the Physaraceae family.

Great Janet; if its a lichen you will notice little to no change, if its a myxomycete, slime mould, it will be totally different by now.

Sorry Theresa, what I meant was I was going to try to explore the various stages of the myxomycete. I don't think I could locate the original sighting. What I did note was that it was growing on wood whereas, all the fungi I have photographed have been on rocks or earth, I think...
