The brown dots are the apothecia (in which the fungal partner produces the sexual spores) and each is about a millimetre in diameter. Photo 2 shows an enlarged view of the central area in Photo 1. Photos 3 and 4 show part of the colony of this Cladonia that was growing on a low soil bank alongside a fire trail. The colony extended for some metres beyond the area shown in Photo 4.
