This wattle starts off having leaves, which it losses in favour of a thicken flattens stem (Phyllode). This may help save water, while having leaves as seeding may help with rapid initial growth to get above understory competitors.

Interesting. Very strange looking at this juvenile stage - like grass with extra leaves! Is it possible to say what type of wattle it is?
