Oops, I thought that the last two photos were clear enough to show the rufous tail feathers. I've added a cropped version to help with the ID. Sorry Chris! We mostly get Horsfield and Pallid cuckoos. They seem to find a lot of success with our local honeyeater and thornbill nests.

Not a great individual to try and ID. Browner colouration and rufous on tail favours Horsfields. Barring and face markings favour Shining. I'm not convinced which it is. I find that often the distinguishing features of Bronze-cuckoos such as the barring and face markings are unrealiable. Perhaps, the rufous tail edge is of the abovementioned factors one of the more reliable.

Fair statement Ryu. This is where a matching audio recording would really help, as the two calls are very distinctive. From memory I am pretty sure it was a Horsfields but the photos are from 2012! I am happy to remove the sighting if you think it is inconclusive. I have more photos of Horsfields at later dates that I was planning to post.

I am confident that this is a Shining Bronze-cuckoo as the face markings look nothing like Horsfield's.
