User's notes

Very small about 5mm long. 3rd photo shows the insect next to the tip of a pencil. The last photo the insect is on the pencil. The insect flew into the car on the dashboard as the door opened, was amazed at the detail in such a tiny insect. It stayed and posed for awhile then flew back out. Went through most of the insects on CNM but could not find it.

Have been doing a bit more searching to try and find out what this insect was and think it is a Sycamore lace bug (Corythucha ciliata), it is not listed on CNM. Hope this helps, Deb

have just put in a suggested species for this sighting think this is. It was put on in April - Sycamore lace bug (Corythucha ciliata) but the name is not in the CNM listing and have had no response about it yet. Thought it may be of interest as it is a pest.

Thanks Deb - I missed this one I will check with my colleges tomorrow. If the ID is right this species was first recorded in Australia in Sydney in 2007. Sycamore Lace Bug is capable of defoliating plant trees, so I think it is one that we would probably want to get on top of if it is not already widespread in our region.

Thanks Michael, hope it is not too widespread already.

My colleges report that it was first observed in Canberra about 4 or 5 years ago and unfortunately is already widespread. There is no biological or other ready control method. The good news is that to date it has not had a major impact on the any of the regions plane trees and their appear to be some plane species and cultivars that it does not attack.
