Donald Hobern photographed a very similar looking moth at Aranda on 28/9.2008 identifying it as Philobota g. perhaps it is identified to species elsewhere? In the ANIC collection perhaps? See his record on the Atlas of Living Australia. See the link below.

It is pretty hard in photos distinguishing Philobota hypocausta
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/oeco/hypocausta.html
from for example Philobota xiphostola
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/oeco/xiphostola.html
and Philobota latifissella
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/oeco/latifissella.html

Agreed. Your point is very well made.

Some Philobota species are difficult to identify, even with the specimen in hand, and to be precise with photos you need a few good ones from different angles. 3384060 and 3384281may or may not be the same species but they probably both belong to Philobota mathmatica group which includes P. xiphostola (and P. lysizona also reported recently). ANIC has a number of informally recognised unnamed species, some of which may be geographic or other variations of a smaller number of true species, and the majority of them are from the southern tablelands. This specimen likely belongs there, although there are other possibilities.
