I'm not convinced that this is C. carneus Derek. Compared to C. fuscatus, C. carneus is more robust, has a thicker often greenish stem and can have 2-3 flowers.
I am having great difficulty with these small orchids particularly when there is only one flower. I have been concentrating on the flower rather than the stem but I can see the difference I think now. These do have smaller/thinner, darker stems than the later subsequent reports from Gungaderra Grasslands. Thanks. Now all I have to work out are the difference between Caladenia cucullata, C.moschata and C. ustulata with all their variations in colour etc.
Yes Derek, the stem is a good clue to the species, also the leaf is shorter and narrower in C. fuscatus. C. carneus is not a common orchid on Black Mountain, usually only found as isolated specimens. Hope to see some on Sunday. The hot spot for C. carneus is Gungahlin Hill.
