This may be Polistes erythrinus which occurs along the Murrumbidgee River, although apparently not in Canberra itself. Needs checking.

Hi Michael M
How can you tell the difference between Polistes (Polistella) humilis and Polistes (Gyrostoma) erythrinus?
   8 Nov 2019
P.erythinus has a deep orange-red colour and orange patterning on the top of its thorax - P. humilis is a washed out brown -orange without the back patterning.
