John - this is an emerald, and may be an Australian rather than tau, but the abdominal markings aren't clear enough to be sure. It might also be a teneral (newly emerged) individual. Do you have any other photos of it that show the sides of the last segments of the abdomen?

Harvey; I've uploaded a second image but I doubt it will assist you. It was on a stick in the the pond. I couldn't photograph it from another angle. Should I delete these?

John - this is looking more and more like an Australian Emerald. Could you post an enlarged view of the back half of the abdomen form the first photo. I just need to see the degree of extension of the yellow markings on segments 7 and 8 particularly.

I've put another crop up but it is not clear, as the photo has been reduced too far.

John, if you zoom in you can just make out that the anterior part of yellow markings on abdominal segments 6 and 7 in particular arc up as points onto the dorsal surface of those segments - hence Hemicordulia australiae.
