Count of fruit bodies growing on the ground, fruit body colour more towards a yellow-orange hue than some picture books show

I can see why you thought of Marasmius elegans, even if these specimens lack the more striking cap colour that I'm accustomed to. Can't think of anything else with that two-toned stem, of that size and growing amongst forest litter. Do you remember if the cap had a velvety feel?

I've added a close up of the cap, my vague memory is of a glistening textured look but I didn't actually touch it. I have subsequently come across an online Victorian Field Naturalist Publication "Fungi in Australia" http://www.fncv.org.au/fungi-in-australia/ which has a species similar in look to this ascribed to Marasmius elegans and illustrated on p210 of Part 3.
