Purplish Stereum is the third fungi in as many days posted on Canberra Nature Map that has either not previously been recorded in the ACT or only has been recorded once before. We still have a lot to find out.

Is it more a matter of these fungi occurring infrequently, or is it more a case of common fungi being neglected?

Good point. I think Xylobolus illudens is an example of a common fungus not reported often. I come across it frequently when turning over dead wood lying on the ground and then see it growing as a flat sheet on the wood's underside. If it starts growing up the side of say a dead log lying on the ground it will grow partly as a log-hugging sheet for a little way up the side but will then grow outward in the form of a short, shelf-like growth. It is then that it would have a better chance of being observed. However, this species can form large patches on the undersides of logs, etc, where it is out of sight to many unless, like me, you have a strong interest in those sheet-like fungi largely confined to the undersides of fallen timber. Even when it produces a shelf-like form, it can be overlooked because the shelf doesn't not protrude greatly and it is not a bright colour that would catch the eye from a distance.
