The species corallaizon and retipora are very similar. My reason for choosing the former over the latter is because I've just looked at the herbarium collections of both species and see that some ACT collections that had once been labelled retipora had been changed to corallaizon, leaving no retipora from the ACT. If you look at the key to the species (in Flora of Australia, vol. 54) you are asked to look inside the hollow stems at what is called the inner medulla (is it compact or stranded). A good handlens may tell you which but the photos don't. The Flora's descriptions of the species says that corallaizon is "pale grey to greenish grey, becoming straw-coloured to pale brown" and retipora is "white to pale grey, sometimes yellowing at tips of branches, sometimes upper portions or tips blackening".

Hadn't realized C. corallaizon was in the ACT. I've added a third image crop from top left of first image which shows the black tips on this one.

After my previous comment I wondered about the tips of corallaizon, given that the Flora description said nothing about them. A look at a few herbarium specimens showed black tips, but I didn't get back to the computer yesterday to add that observation.

Heino can you please confirm whether you think this is Cladia retipora or Cladia corallaizon. Thanks

Michael

No confirm button shows up for me. Until a reliable record of Cladia retipora turns up in the ACT, I will use only the name corallaizon.
