Clitocybe s.l.

Clitocybe s.l. means " Clitocybe in the broad, old sense" and s.l. is a standard abbreviation in botanical works for the Latin phrase sensu lato (meaning 'in the broad sense'). Clitocybe, as understood decades ago, has been split into several genera that are not easy to recognize visually. Note that the genus Clitocybe still exists but more narrowly defined than before. The usage of s.l. will, at times, allow a level of identification finer than family but where it is not possible to have any confidence in assigning a genus to a photograph. In older times if you had a white-spored mushroom, with a more -or-less funnel-shaped cap (often white to greyish or brownish) and with no veil remnants left on cap or stem you'd rarely go wrong if you called it Clitocybe
