Elachistidae (family) (Grass Miner Moths)

Small to tiny moths. Some genera have moved to this family from Cosmopterigidae. Many have tufts of erect scales on their forewings. The larvae live in mines in monocots such as grasses and sedges. The mine forms a curving or zig zag line beginning small and widens as the larva grows. The moths can be active by day.
