A corticioid fungus that grows on the lower surfaces of dead wood. The fruiting body shows as abundant, closely-packed blunt, whiteish to creamy-yellowish narrowly conical to cylindric teeth or spines. When viewed with a 10x magnification hand lens (or through a camera’s macro lens) the teeth appear somewhat fuzzy because numerous microscopic organs (called cystidia) protrude beyond the surface of each tooth or spine.

This species is found in many parts of the world, in a variety of habitats.

Look-alikes

This is macroscopically similar to several species, not all in the genus Hyphodontia, so identification relies on microscopic features.
