Flies and bees regurgitate their stomach contents to produce a droplet in a process called ‘bubbling’ as seen in these images. In the case of flies, the liquid droplet is comprised of saliva and pre-digested food. The droplet is exposed to ambient temperature and partially evaporates. In doing so, the droplet is cooled down, its volume is reduced and its contents are concentrated. When the droplet is drawn back into the fly’s digestive tract it is far more concentrated in nutrients, takes up less volume, and helps to cool the fly.
