User's notes

These two Wedge-tails were flying the ridge lift in front of Shepherds Lookout when they passed a hovering kestrel which chased after them and went for the tail of one of the eagles. The kestrel was persistent and the eagles left the area shortly afterwards. For the record, there were another two Wedge-tails soaring above the Molonglo Sewerage Works off in the distance.

Great images thanks Tim - brave Kestrel!! :-) Good to know that both pairs of Wedgies were observed.
We've been on the lookout for any nesting behaviour as Joe from MRC mentioned their nest (across the river in Woodtsock NR) looks as though it has partially collapsed. Did you happen to observed them heading to a nest site? We are not sure if they will rebuild this nest, or if they are still using it, or they will build a new one somewhere close by. The existing nest has been in use for many many years.

Hi @Ange Thanks for your comments. Yes, the Kestrel went for the tail feathers of one of the birds and almost got them. I have a few more images of this sighting that I'm working on, and they will be in sufficient detail for you to identify the individual eagles if that helps you. The two eagles were soaring the area between the Molonglo Sewerage Works and the open land just north of Shepherds Lookout. They spent some time above Shepherds Lookout before the kestrel went for them and then they returned back towards the Sewerage Works and the two other eagles that were still in the air above the works. I didn't see them heading out across the river, but I'll keep an eye out for them in the future and let you know if I do. Tim

Thanks so much Tim! That would be great. Ranger Joe from MRC tells me the pair that were using that nest were last formally monitored back in 2019 by the late Jerry Olsen and he had called the female Emma. I'm guessing she must have some distinguishing feature if he knew it was her nesting there each season. I will share any pics with Joe in case he has those details. I've sent him the link to this page already. Really appreciate all the sightings you post on NatureMap from your wanders through the Corridor. :-)
