The boletus was originally sighted as a small patch of yellow pores showing through an undisturbed mound pushing up through the dirt path. Some of the dirt was cleared away (first image) to show the stem and underside of the brown capped boletus. More dirt was removed to show the configuration of the fungus, as seen in the final image. It appears as though the boletus had started to grow within the ground and as it pushed upwards, the stem has bent over, and the cap has formed on its side within the ground, mostly upside down. The first time I’ve seen this type of configuration. Thanks to Barbara for the initial sighting on the Cyprus Pine Lookout path.
