User's notes

Photos working backwards . . . Last photo was when we became aware that dollarbirds were nesting. I could hear, every fifteen to thirty minutes, an incessant begging. Eventually I went to find the source (initially I thought it was a gang-gang nest). As I passed this hollow, I realised that the begging was from here, and suddenly I realised that this was where the dollarbirds were nesting. I'd seen them around, but hadn't been able to suss out their nest until now. The parents were busy plucking insects from the air, then ducking into the hollow, feeding, and straight out again. A fortnight later, and the dollarbirds were close to fledging. To my surprise, the parents used the same tactics as gang-gang parents to encourage the young out of the hollow. The parents called from nearby trees, flew to a tree directly in front of hollow (first photo), then off to another tree. They did not feed the chick for a very long time. Interestingly, the parents were monstered by noisy miners when in one tree, while the dollarbirds were calling to their young (3rd photo).
