Significant sighting

MichaelMulvaney noted:

Any suburban record of a Bush Stone Curlew is significant. It has probably dispersed from the introduced population at Mulligans Flat. A Phd study involved tracking of some of these birds and they took trips to places including Tidbinbilla, Bungendore and Sutton.

User's notes

This seems like a very surprising location to find a bush stone curlew (Tuggeranong Valley - no other sightings on Canberra southside). Photos were via iPhone12 so not great quality and I only took a few as I was out cycling when we came across the bird. We were very surprised. Exact GPS details on orginal images. We didn't stand and watch the bird so no idea where it progressed to once we'd left. Bird could not be found when we returned 2-3 hours later. Update - 2100hrs - bird still in the area. Seen moving from garden bed to garden bed at about 2030hrs.

Fantastic record. No tags from what I can see. I'll pass on to ANU.

Thanks so much for reporting this significant sighting. This is the first report of a bush stone-curlew southside since one was recorded in Red Hill in 2022. It is likely other curlews have been in the area since then, but either not detected or simply not reported.
