I suspect that the wingless female is to the right of the egg mass in pictures 2 and 3 - what a strange thing!

Yes. She is much bigger before she lays all her eggs. Many/most case moths (Psychidae) also have flightless females who may not even leave their case. The Pterolocera group of Anthelids also have wingless/flightless females. Also (Introduced) Silk Worms don't develop their wings properly but that may be the result of domestication
