Helen, that is a "classic" Canis lupus dingo photo. Thank you. I am not trying to "stir" with naming - we have to work hard to protect one of our apex predators.

Yep, it's a vexed issue!

Hello Liam.m. I received a message from you about dingoes. I have never studied them but care greatly about their survival. The best reference I can give you is: https://theconversation.com/dingoes-are-not-domestic-dogs-new-evidence-shows-these-native-canines-are-on-their-own-evolutionary-path-262938
I hope this helps our "conversations".

I understand Canis lupus to be the wolf?

Hi intouch,
The scientific name for the dingo recognised by the International Committee on Zoological Nomenclature is Canis lupus dingo. That accords with the concept of the dingo as a subspecies of the Asian Wolf. The European Wolf found in Europe, Canada and the USA would be Canis lupus lupus.

Thanks @DonFletcher, should NatureMapr be using Canis lupus dingo then?

Hi Helen
It is using Canis lupus, so not wrong. I just went in to edit the taxonomy (including that I was going to add the indigenous common name Waragul) but it did not let me edit. Aaaaarrrrggghhh!!! As ever the case there is no courtesy information or clue why - it could be that editing has been disabled for everyone (like our ability to see the map and the ability to download data) or it could be that I can no longer edit, or it could be that the dingo species can not be edited because it is controversial. It is a whole rigmarole fto find out and then i probably cant get a change anyway. The mapless Nature Mapper frustrates me too much. Things so rarely work how it says on the packet. And I just dont have that much time to suffer the frustration and blood pressure.

@DonFletcher, it worked when I edited it at a global level. Should now display as Canis lupus dingo?

Thanks Liam. Yes @DonFletcher it is a big shame we've lost the map feature when looking at taxa level :(
