I don't think this caterpillar matches the image of Asura cervicalis on http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lith/cervicalis.html
If anything it looks more like Castulo sp - body covered with swellings from which the spines bristle.

@WendyEM yes the body does look alike. Castulo doesn't appear to have "bunny ear" tufts, which were quite prominent on my sighting. Thoughts?

Yes, ('bunny ears') they are very impressive. We will have to remain on the lookout for an ID.
One of the EntSocVic/Moth of Vic people has been doing LOTS of work collecting eggs and raising through. Some is published in Moths of Vic but I hope he plans to publish more of his findings elsewhere. We can wait and see.
