User's notes

This sighting provides additional close-up details at 1:2X and 1:5X of the Crane Fly shown in previous sighting 4715097. The first image is a side view showing the compound eye and the snout-like rostrum with maxillary palps extending from the mouth area. (The palps are used for sensing the environment). To the left of the compound eye is an open spiracle through which air enters the thorax. The second image shows details of the complex connections of the wings and halteres to the thorax. (The halteres are balancing organs that aid flight, having evolved from a second pair of wings). The third image provides details of the rostrum, the maxillary palps and the compound eyes. The image shows that these Crane Flies don’t have the three small ‘simple eyes’ (the ocelli) that are possessed by many insects. The fourth image shows the abdomen with long, pointed ends. The final image is a close-up of a wing showing the leading and trailing edges (top and bottom of the image, respectively) and wing veins.
