Around 11.30am, I saw this male wheel into a tree and rest in the shade. He was between two potential nest hollows - one a known hollow that is currently incubating, the other was a faintly possible gg nest tree (which I thought belonged to sulphur-crested cockatoos). So I decided to wait. With the dog on my lap, I watched as the male preened for quarter of an hour. He then flew to the unexpected tree (which I call Big Old Tree - BOT). He perched there quietly for another 20 minutes, before leaning forward. Which hollow would he choose - there were so many possibilities? Heart in mouth, I saw him fly straight to a large hollow (which I'd never have picked) and quickly disappear. There were no birds for a minute or two. Then out popped the female. Her beak was markedly muddied - same colour as the inside of the hollow, it seems - but I'm hoping there is no water near their nest. She preened in the mouth of the hollow, then moved up to the top of the hollow in the sun, preened again, then flew off. When I looked closer at the photo of the male, I could see his beak was also markedly discoloured.
