User's notes

Five days ago I saw a pair of galahs looking into the hollow, but not entering (I assume this is the pair that have nested in this hollow for years). I suspected there were Kreft's gliders living there, given last year's observations at this hollow. The next day the nest was poled, and photos confirmed this was the case, with fresh leaves, then the head of a glider, nesting in the hollow. Tonight I noticed a galah at the entrance to the hollow, looking out. Intrigued, I stayed to see what would happen. The galah continued to stay at the entrance. At around 6pm, her mate arrived and perched on the outside of the hollow entrance. They spoke gently to each other, and remained close. My heart was in my mouth - would the glider burst from the hollow, teeth bared, grabbing a galah on its way out? Then I heard a scrabbling, and saw movement above the galah hollow. A glider emerged from a hollow above the galahs, and climbed swiftly up the tree (which I managed to video, poorly. The final photo is a screen shot from the video). The galahs remained together for a while. I had to leave, but my sense is that one went down into the hollow, and the other stayed at the entrance. From this observation, my assumption is that both galahs will guard the hollow tonight. So many questions - how did they grab the hollow? Have they laid an egg already? Are they guarding the hollow until ready to lay and incubate? Will they be able to protect themselves and their young from the gliders?
