User's notes

This family group consists of one male (white-backed), two females and two juveniles from the previous season. I have previously avoided posting common species such as magpies but have recently decided that the posts can be of great value regarding district distribution and behaviour such as if juveniles are allowed to stay for subsequent breeding seasons. I noted that in my area, during the drought, a local family of one male and two females, always reared four chicks only a couple of wich survived but the parents always kicked the chicks out the following season. Come better rain periods they only reared two to three chcks each and the female chicks were allowed to stay for one or two futher seasons. I've realised that within a tow- three kilmetre curcumference of my house I can identify around 40 different family groups, without invesigating every street location. This is based on walking from my home, down Belconnen Way to the Hawker ovals and up to the Hawker Primary school - down Drake-Brockman Drive - and walking through the park behind my house and cutting across the ovals to Kippax Shopping Centre. So I apologise in advance for all of the Magpie observations I will be posting. These data may become of significance to a future study regarding Magpie territory and behaviour.
