The larva of a moth cut off the main trunk of the Hakea in a particular way leaving the trunk appearing to have been neatly cut or sawn off. So the moth isn't in the photo, but it is known by it's work.

This looks more like the work of a Longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) larva.
