I've checked on PlantNET filtering plant name search by Southern Tablelands Botanical Subdivision. Given the height, the slender culms/stems, simple inflorescence, and the lengths of the leaf-like involucral bracts looks closest looking candidates are C. lhotskyanus, C. sanguinolentus or C. unioloides? Unless it's a new species or a species from outside of the Southern Tablelands Botanical Subdivision?

Thanks Jane for resolving this mystery which had us stumped - not used to seeing C. eragrostis like this. Also thanks for the other (Juncus) ID at this property. Sorry I didn't meet you at the FOG mid-winter event at St Marks last Saturday - I was standing in the corner behind you.

You should have said Hello!
I thinks it’s Cyperus eragrostis because of the dense number of heads ( although more commonly these are pedunculate, but herbivory and disturbance cab change appearances ), because of the involucral bracts, and because of where it seems to be growing: which is beside a driveway or vehicle trail, so a slightly disturbed area.
